Deconstructed pantsuits and jackets, a winter terno coat, a reproduction of a ’50s party dress, and cutouts that represent the missing pieces of a loved one.

These and more were on exhibit when the country’s top fashion institution, Slim’s Fashion & Arts School, celebrated a successful 2012 with a first-ever public exhibit by its graduating class at the Gallery Area, Greenbelt 5, Makati.

Slim’s, founded 52 years ago by haute couture designer Salvacion Lim “Slim” Higgins, produced this year two winners in Preview’s Emerging Fashion Talent Awards (Pefta). The fashion institution’s graduates have also bagged the top prize in all three seasons so far of the reality-TV show “Project Runway Philippines.”

REMNANTS of childhood memories adorned the recent Slim’s Fashion and Arts School’s student exhibit at the Fashion Hall of SM Megamall. The annual event’s theme for this year was laro, which took form in pieces of clothing inspired by that past time of youth. On view was a showcase of fashion all designed, cut and sewn by students, each ensemble with a distinct playfulness gleaned from the psychedelic patterns, whimsical silhouettes and exuberant colors.
